MD Day 6 - Boozy Brunches, Cute Cousins, and Dinosaurs and Diamonds
Today started with Brunch at the Mad Hatter, which came highly recommended. Scott and I for some reason both ordered something called the Hangover Helper, which included eggs, cheese, biscuits, and absolutely massive home fries. There was also unlimited mimosas. After the past two days, I wasn't really looking forward to drinking more, but the orange juice makes it healthy.
After that I got coffee at a place called Tryst. It was very good and near some cool bookstores which I enjoyed browsing around. I didn't buy anything because I've had a very tough time finding time to read on this trip. I did however buy a copy of the first three issues of RAW magazine founded by Art Spiegelman and Fancoise Mouly on the street because it was only one dollar, and featured works by some of the finest underground comics in the business.
From there, I met up with my cousin, Marc, again at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. This time though his five year old son, Jack, came along. Jack was a great tour guide. He knew where all the best sights in the museum were, and he could name at least five villains for every superhero in the justice league which I bet none of the "official" museum guides could do.
Besides having the best of all possible tour guides, the museum was really cool. There were hundreds of different animals skeletons, dinosaur fossils, and mummies. The coolest thing I thought was the Hope Diamond, which is one of the oldest and largest known diamonds with a fascinating history. It belonged to at different times royalty and peasants alike, had been stolen a few times, and was also supposedly cursed.
After the museum, I had to say goodbye to Jack and Marc because Jack had to get ready for his first sleepover ever which is a sacred milestone.
Scott picked me up at the metro station, and we went to Chik-fil-A because it's one chain I've never been to. I don't really understand why a big chain restaurant would take any big political stance let alone an anti-gay stance that has very little to do with chicken. It was good chicken, but I like KFC and Popeye's more so I don't really ever need to go back.
After that I went back to Scott's place. I had been bumped from the show I was supposed to do because the headliner wanted a buddy of his to go up. This isn't too uncommon, and honestly I was so worn out that having a night in was pretty nice. I worked on my writing and binge watched the first season of the Good Place which I really enjoyed. There's not a lot of high concept sitcoms any more let alone ones that actually stick the landing. Some of the jokes can be a little cutesy, but Ted Danson's character alone is so funny that it's even if the rest of the ensemble wasn't great (which they are) it would at least be worth a peek.
Scott was hanging out with work friends while I was writing and binging, but when he got back he brought me a pumpkin pie Blizzard from Dairy Queen, which is possibly the best thing about the month of October and a reason I will treasure our friendship for ever.
Favorite Random Sightings: Fat Boy's Crab House; Crunchie's Pet Food; Happy Halloweed; Meat in a Box
Regional Observation: This one is actually from yesterday, but Scott had mentioned that everyone at his work likes Papa John's, but in MA that is notoriously bad pizza. I had some DC Papa John's and it was way better, and I don't know why that is.
Albums Listened To: Fear Fun by Father John Misty
People's Favorite Jokes:
Knock Knock/Who's there?/Little old lady/ Little Old Lady who?/ I didn't know you could yodel
Jack's Favorite Joke: ETHAN ATE A BUTT (I don't know who Ethan is, but the joke was still hilarious)
Knock Knock/ Who's there?/ Joe/ Joe who?/ Joker! (Did I mention that Jack is very smart for a five year old, because he came out with this very quickly after learning my name)
