NH Day 6 - Amateur Dentistry, Experimental Breweries, and Sing-Alongs Intentional and Otherwise
Little Video:
Sorry if these videos are overly long and/or uninteresting, it is my thought that if I'm going to say all this information anyways, the videos will be more interesting than just those same ideas typed out. If that's not the case, just let me know! Also if you'd like more consistent (hopefully) funny updates from me, my twitter and instagram are updated at least daily and can be reached either through the contact page or the cover page. Please feel free to contact me through whichever means you prefer.
Now that that's out way, travel stuff:
I'll hopefully get to explore a little more tomorrow, but Nashua seems like a pretty nice town. The center has a very old-timey feel to it. Lots of brick buildings and a sense of community. I really loved the Riverwalk Cafe, and if I were staying longer I would definitely try to see a show there. They seemed to run the gamut from country to jazz to dj type stuff. The barista is also the only person to recognize my Slackers t-shirt outside of a record store so that was a nice moment of spiritual connection.
After that was the Libby Museum in Wolfesboro, NH. The whole town felt a lot lake a seaside town in MA except on a lake in the middle of the state instead of the ocean. The whole town was quaint and pretty, and even though it had a kind of bougie vibe, there was free parking, nice shops, and insane views of the lake. I had a really amazing brownie that had been dipped in chocolate and garnished with a flower made of icing at Gatherings by Stellaloona. Unfortunately, it was so good I ate it before I could take a picture, which seems like a mom joke but is 100% true.
I'd highly recommend the Libby Museum, it's pretty small but densely filled with oddities both natural and man made. Admission is only $5, and the staff is almost too-friendly in that we had a nice chat and I had to remind her that I hadn't paid yet.
Back in Portsmouth (lots of driving today), I cannot recommend Earth Eagle Brewing enough. I've already expressed my disdain for IPAs, so to go to a brewery that doesn't use hops at all was very exciting. Apparently gruits are actually a very ancient form of beer, and while this isn't the only place in the US that makes them, they're not very common. The food, service, and atmosphere were all top notch as well, and they appear to host events there not infrequently. If you go for lunch Mon-Thurs, it's only $12 for a sandwich and a pint. What's stopping you from going?
After I got home, I got to hang out with my Air BnB host a bit. We had tea, sang songs from the musical Hair, and she told me that her mom was a founding member of the Raging Grannies, a group of older activists who wore big hats and caused public mischief for political change.
And while I didn't get to see any comedy shows today, I was very lucky to have just bumped into comedy legend Chris Rock on the side of the road:
Favorite Random Sightings: A B&B for dogs called The Bed and Biscuit; The Pizza Man; A sign for the restaurant Country Cook-In with a smaller sign reading "Cook needed"; A very honest store named Mostly Golf
Regional Observation: NH really leans in on having no sales tax, but they have 9% meal tax which is a lot tougher if you're eating out more than you're buying stuff *cough cough*
Etiquette Question: It's totally fine to use the bathroom at gas stations without buying anything, right?
Albums Listened To: Alice by Tom Waits; Alive Behind the Green Door by Flogging Molly; All Day by The Pietasters; All Hail West Texas by The Mountain Goats (incomplete though, just the songs my sister liked best); The All Skanadian Club: Best of Canadian Ska; All Summer Long by the Beach Boys; All Things Must Pass by George Harrison (absolutely the best Beatles solo album)
People's Favorite Jokes:
Why didn't the lifeguard save the drowning hippie? He was too far out man.
"I'm just a funny guy, but I don't know any jokes" - man outside Dunkin' Donuts
What's the derivative of 1 over cabin? log cabin
What's the worst part about being an atheist? Not having anyone to talk to when you're having an orgasm
What shakes and is at the bottom of the ocean? A nervous wreck
Funny True fact from the Receptionist at the Libby Museum: "There are two skeletons in that cabinet over there, one is a human who was a friend of Libby and gave it to him after she died. The other is an ape, but he used to tell people it was Abraham Lincoln."
